ObjectGear
Welcome to the next level of clip art! The ObjectGear CD ROM series contains the
most useful stock photographs ever. Slick, clean, high resolution photos of the
most requested objects and design elements, close cropped and ready to use. How
many times have you found the perfect photograph of an object in some other
stock photo collection, only to have to crop and edit the image manually in
order to pull the item off a busy background? Well no more. ObjectGear photos
are already close cropped. Our team of photographers and designers have combined
their efforts and completed all of the hard work for you. ObjectGear images are
saved as RGB TIFF files with embedded PostScript clipping paths. No cropping. No
conversion. No compatibility problems.
Use ObjectGear images directly from the CD ROM in your page layout or
illustration software. Need a shadow for an image? No problem. All ObjectGear
images have prebuilt "drop" and "cast" shadows available as well. Combine the
shadows and objects in Adobe Photoshop without any fuss or muss. It has never
been easier to combine and layer photographic elements for your creative
designs.
Macintosh & IBM PC Compatibility
*************************************************
All ObjectGear CD ROMs are multi-platform compatible. This means that the same
CD ROM disc may be used on either a Macintosh or IBM PC computer system. The
photographic image files on the ObjectGear disc may be used on both platforms,
as is. Files specific to either the Macintosh or the PC platform are only
visible to users of that platform. Using the international ISO9660 CD ROM
standard, ObjectGear discs may be accessed using nearly every CD ROM drive
available today.
System Requirements
*************************************************
The minimum PC configuration is a 286 compatible with 4 mb of RAM, 25 mb of
free hard drive space, a CD ROM drive, MS DOS version 4.1 or later and an EGA
graphics card.
The recommended PC configuration is a 386 compatible or better with 8 mb of RAM,
100 mb of free hard drive space, a double speed CD ROM drive, Microsoft Windows
3.1 or later and a high resolution SVGA graphics card with 1 mb or more video RAM.
The minimum Macintosh configuration is a Macintosh II with 4 mb of RAM, 25 mb of
free hard drive space, System Software version 6.0.7 or later, a CD ROM drive
and an 8 bit grey scale monitor.
The recommended Macintosh configuration is a Macintosh IIci or faster with 20 mb
of RAM, 100 mb of free hard drive space, System Software version 7.1 or later, a
double speed CD ROM drive and an 24 bit color monitor.
Image File Formats
*************************************************
* High Resolution Images
These files are approximately 4.0 inches x 5.0 inches at 300 pixels per inch.
Individual file dimensions will vary because of the wide range of object shapes
and sizes. High resolution files are supplied as RGB TIFF (Tagged Image File
Format) files. All object files contain an embedded PostScript clipping path to
provide a clean, sharp crop of the object when placed onto a non-white
background. Please refer to the section entitled "Using Clipping Paths" for
information on utilizing these paths. Images are between 1.0 mb and 5.0 mb in
size and are ideal for high resolution, quarter page (4.0 x 5.0 inches)
reproduction at 150 lines per inch and lower screen frequencies.
* Low Resolution Images
These files are approximately 4.0 inches x 5.0 inches at 72 pixels per inch.
Individual file dimensions will vary because of the wide range of object shapes
and sizes. Low resolution files are also supplied as RGB TIFF files. All object
files contain an embedded PostScript clipping path to provide a clean, sharp
crop of the object when placed onto a non-white background. Please refer to the
section entitled "Using Clipping Paths" for information on utilizing these
paths. Images are less than 350 kb in size and are best suited for multimedia
presentations, "for position only" placement in layouts and on-screen
previewing.
* Drop Shadow & Cast Shadow Files
The "Drop" and "Cast" shadow files found in the \SHADOWS\ directory have been
supplied as LZW compressed greyscale TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) files at
300 pixels per inch. Compressed TIFF is a non-lossy compression scheme that
ensures the detail and resolution is maintained in the image. All shadow files
have the same base dimensions as their High Resolution and Low Resolution object
counterparts. This allows an object file to be placed directly on top of a
shadow file without scaling. The shadow files are less than 200 kb in size and
are ideal for high resolution, quarter page (4.0 x 5.0 inches) reproduction at
150 lines per inch and lower screen frequencies.
ObjectGear File Name Extensions
*************************************************
The files on all ObjectGear CD ROMs have been named using a set of extensions
that allow for quick identification of the different file types and resolutions.
Use the following table as reference.
Type of File Macintosh Extension PC Extension
High Resolution Object .high.tif H.TIF
Low Resolution Object .low.tif L.TIF
Cast Shadow .cast.tif C.TIF
Drop Shadow .drop.tif D.TIF
Using ObjectGear Images
*************************************************
* Adobe PageMaker
To use ObjectGear images in a PageMaker document, choose "Place." from the
"File" menu. In the file dialog box select an image file from the ObjectGear CD
ROM. Click the "OK" button. The cursor changes to indicate that you are placing
an image. Click somewhere on the PageMaker document to place the image. The
image may now be repositioned, scaled or cropped. Although you can place RGB
TIFF files directly into PageMaker, if you are going to be producing color
separated film from your document, it is suggested that you convert the RGB
images to CMYK format before using them. To do this, open the ObjectGear image
file in an image editing application such as Adobe Photoshop. Change the color
mode to CMYK. Save the image as a new file, and place it into your document.
Beginning with version 6.0, Adobe PageMaker directly supports the embedded
clipping paths contained in the object images. This allows you to place the
images over other elements on your page. The clipping path in the object file
will provide a clean, sharp edge around the object, allowing the background or a
previously placed shadow file to appear directly underneath the image. See the
examples of using embedded clipping paths on the opposite side of this document.
* QuarkXPress
To use ObjectGear images in a QuarkXPress document, create a picture box with
one of the picture box creation tools. Select the content tool and click on the
picture box. Choose "Get Picture" from the "File" menu. In the file dialog box
select an image file from the ObjectGear CD ROM. Click the "Open" button. The
image is inserted into the picture box and may now be scaled, cropped or
repositioned within the picture box. Although you can place the RGB TIFF files
directly into QuarkXPress, if you are going to be producing color separated film
from your document, it is suggested that you convert the RGB images to CMYK
format before using them. To do this, open the ObjectGear image file in an image
editing application such as Adobe Photoshop. Change the color mode to CMYK. Save
the image as a new file, and place it into your document. QuarkXPress does not
directly support embedded clipping paths in TIFF files. To gain the
functionality of the clipping paths in the object files, you may need to convert
the files to EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format. Refer to the section entitled
"Using Clipping Paths" for information on converting files to EPS format.
* Adobe Illustrator
To use ObjectGear images in an Illustrator document, choose "Place..." from the
"File" menu. In the file dialog box select an image file from the ObjectGear CD
ROM. Click the "Place" button. The image is placed into the Illustrator document
and may now be repositioned, scaled or cropped. Please note that versions of
Adobe Illustrator earlier than version 6.0 on the Macintosh and version 4.0 on
the PC do not support TIFF format files. ObjectGear images must be converted to
EPS format before they can be used with these earlier versions of Illustrator.
See the section, "Using Clipping Paths" for information on converting ObjectGear
files to EPS format.
* Macromedia FreeHand
To use ObjectGear images in a FreeHand document, choose "Place." from the "File"
menu. In the file dialog box select an image file from the ObjectGear CD ROM.
Click the "Open" button. The cursor changes to indicate that you are placing a
graphic image. Click somewhere on the FreeHand document to place the image. The
image may now be repositioned, scaled, rotated or cropped. Although you can
place the RGB TIFF files directly into FreeHand, if you are going to be
producing color separated film from your document, it is suggested that you
convert the RGB images to CMYK format before using them. To do this, open the
ObjectGear image file in an image editing application such as Adobe Photoshop.
Change the color mode to CMYK. Save the image as a new file, and place it into
your document. FreeHand does not directly support embedded clipping paths in
TIFF files. To gain the functionality of the clipping paths in the object files,
you may need to convert the files to EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) format. Refer
to the section entitled "Using Clipping Paths" for information on converting
ObjectGear files to EPS format.
Editing ObjectGear Images
*************************************************
ObjectGear images may be edited in any raster or bitmap based image editing
application that supports TIFF format files. To edit these images, first launch
an image editing application such as Adobe Photoshop. Choose "Open." from the
"File" menu. In the file dialog box select an image from the ObjectGear CD ROM.
Click the "Open" button. The image will open in a window. You may now edit,
crop, color adjust or modify the image, and then save it as a new image file for
use in your designs. The embedded PostScript clipping path may also be edited or
modified in Adobe Photoshop by using the tools available in the Photoshop
"Paths" palette.
Using Clipping Paths
*************************************************
Currently, very few applications support embedded clipping paths within TIFF
files. If your particular page layout or illustration program does not support
TIFF embedded clipping paths, then you must convert the ObjectGear files to EPS
(encapsulated PostScript) format before using them in your documents.
To save an ObjectGear image as an EPS files, open an ObjectGear image file in
Photoshop. Change the color mode from RGB to CMYK format. Choose "Save As..."
from the "File" menu. In the file dialog box, select "EPS" from the "Format:"
pop up menu. Click the "Save" button. An "EPS Format" dialog box appears. Select
either "Macintosh (8 bits/pixel)" for Macintosh files or "TIFF (8 bits/pixel)"
for Windows files in the "Preview:" pop up menu. Next, select either "Binary"
for Macintosh files or "ASCII" for Windows files in the "Encoding:" pop up menu.
Select "Path 1" in the "Path:" pop up menu. Click the "OK" button. The image is
now saved as an EPS format file that can be placed into most illustration and
layout programs.
For additional information, refer to the section on Saving EPS Files in the
Adobe Photoshop User Guide.

The use of Adobe Acrobat and the Portable Document Format (PDF) at Image
Club is integrated with nearly all of our information distribution tasks.
Because of Acrobat, we aren't as reliant on laser printers, imagesetters,
offset presses, paper or postage costs to publish & distribute our internal
documents, product information or graphic samples. Everything from text
and simple line drawings to EPS clip art and the richest, full color digital
photographs can be distributed using the PDF format. Acrobat allows fast
access to images or text with the same level of quality as the original
document, independent of computer platform.
